The Importance of Engaging Faith Communities in Responding to Elder Abuse: An Introduction for E-MDTs (7.22.2025)

Please join the National Elder Abuse MDT Training and Technical Assistance Center, Alyson Morse Katzman and Anne Marie Hunter, Co-Directors of Safe Havens Interfaith Partnership for a discussion on engaging with the faith community in your E-MDT work. Participants will explore how faith can be both a critical resource and a significant barrier to safety for older adults who experience abuse. They will also consider how abuse can be spiritual as well as physical, emotional, sexual, and financial, and how any form of abuse can precipitate a spiritual crisis. In addition, participants will look at the relationships that older adults enjoy with their faith leaders and faith communities, how a trained faith leader/faith community could play an important role on an E-MDT in providing support, referrals and another lens in examination of the abuse happening.
