Substitute Decision-Makers: An Overview for E-MDT Coordinators (6.18.2024)

Substitute decision-makers, including those designated through power of attorney documents and guardianship arrangements, can wield significant influence over the lives and well-being of older adults. While these arrangements can serve as valuable tools for family members and caregivers of older adults, they can also be used to abuse or exploit vulnerable victims. As E-MDT coordinators, understanding the nuances of the substitute decision-maker’s role is essential for effectively evaluating and intervening in cases of elder abuse. This webinar aims to equip coordinators with knowledge and strategies necessary to navigate the complexities of substitute decision-making within the context of an E-MDT’s work. The session will cover the similarities and differences between Powers of Attorney and guardianship, how substitute decision-making tools can support or impede interventions in elder abuse cases, and how E-MDT’s can leverage the role of substitute decision-makers in case discussions and interventions.
